Hey, friends! Today we’re sharing Faith and Nate’s Agecroft Hall & Gardens Richmond Engagement engagement session here in Richmond, Virginia. We originally had their session planned for Maymont Park, but a private concert ended up closing off the park for the weekend. So, we did what you sometimes have to do when you’re a wedding photographer: pivot.

Luckily, Faith and Nate are incredibly laid-back and just go with the flow. We reached out to them with the news, and Faith was basically like, “Yeah, that’s cool. Let’s figure something else out.” And that’s how we ended up at Agecroft Hall & Gardens.

From Maymont Park to Agecroft Hall

We’ve photographed engagement sessions at Maymont quite a few times, including days when there are events happening nearby. Usually, Maymont is big that you can work around the crowds, even if there’s an event there. For today however, the entire park was closed off for a huge jazz festival, and getting in would have meant buying a ticket to the event.

Not exactly the engagement session environment we had planned.

So we started looking at other options and landed on Agecroft Hall. And honestly, it ended up being such a good change of plans.

Agecroft Hall is this incredible English country estate right here in Richmond, with beautiful gardens and views toward the James River. It’s almost like an elevated feel up from Maymont, so it works really well for engagement photos.

Why Agecroft Hall Is So Good for Engagement Photos

One of the biggest advantages of photographing an engagement session at Agecroft Hall is the privacy.

You rent a time slot, so you’re not walking around a giant public park with people everywhere. There were a few other people we crossed paths with during Faith and Nate’s session, but for the most part, it was just us.

And if you’re someone who isn’t exactly thinking, “I cannot wait to have my picture taken!” that can make a huge difference.

We’ve been at Maymont on busy days when there are people waiting in line to use certain photo spots. We’ve literally seen a line of people waiting for their turn at the gazebo. Maymont is gorgeous, but sometimes it can feel a little like you’re on stage.

At Agecroft, you can just relax.

The Gardens – Agecroft Hall & Gardens Richmond Engagement

The gardens are another huge reason we love Agecroft Hall for engagement photos.

We moved through several different areas during Faith and Nate’s session, and every spot felt a little different. The gardens are incredibly well maintained, and we’ve been there at different times of year and always found it looking beautiful.

You also get the architecture of Agecroft Hall itself, the gardens, the trees, and views toward the James River, so there is a surprising amount of variety for one location. And there’s something about having all of that without a ton of people around that makes the whole session feel really easy.

A Richmond Engagement Session That Felt Easy

It was a warm summer evening, which, at this point, has us very ready for fall. Very ready. But Faith and Nate did such a great job. They were so easy to hang out with, and the whole evening felt really relaxed. There wasn’t any pressure to make everything perfect. We could just move around the gardens, find pretty light, and let them interact with each other.

And honestly, those are our favorite engagement sessions. You don’t need a complicated plan. Sometimes you just need a beautiful place, good light, and a couple who is willing to go with the flow.

Why We Love Having Options for Engagement Sessions

This session was a good reminder that having a few Richmond engagement locations in your back pocket is always a good idea. Maymont Park is one of our go-to locations, but Agecroft Hall & Gardens gives you something completely different. It’s quieter, more private, and has that beautiful garden and estate feel without having to leave Richmond.

Plus, when your original plan gets completely derailed by a jazz festival, it’s nice to have a backup. And in this case, we think Faith and Nate ended up with a pretty great one.
