Hey, friends! Today we’re sharing Stephanie and Joe’s incredible Estate at Independence Richmond wedding day at Independence Golf Club, just outside Richmond in Powhatan, Virginia. And honestly, this was such a good day.

There are a lot of reasons for that, but we have to start with the venue because The Estate at Independence is seriously underrated. We’ve photographed there before, and every time we’re there, we leave wondering why we don’t shoot there every weekend!

An Underrated Virginia Wedding Venue

The Estate at Independence is part of Independence Golf Club, but it doesn’t really feel like you’re getting married surrounded by golfers and golf carts. The main building is beautiful. The getting-ready spaces are great. The areas for portraits are gorgeous. And the staff is just wonderful. And, yes, the food is good too, which is always important.

One of the things we really like about the venue is that you don’t constantly feel like you’re running into golfers. The golf course is there, obviously, but the wedding spaces feel separate and private. The getting ready spaces are separated from the main area of foot traffic. And during Stephanie and Joe’s day, we barely saw anyone outside of the wedding.

The only time we really ran into someone was when we took the guys up from their getting ready room into the coffee shop area, where someone was coming through to get to the pro shop. That’s about it. For a wedding venue that’s part of a golf club, it feels surprisingly private.

A Wedding Party That Made Everything Easy

If we could package up Stephanie and Joe’s wedding party and take them to every wedding we photograph, we probably would. Especially the girls. They were hilarious, incredibly sweet, on time, ready to go, encouraging, and just genuinely fun to be around. And they were gorgeous, which made our job pretty easy too.

I was photographing the ceremony from the back while Michael was up front, and as the bridesmaids started walking down the aisle, there was an older couple sitting in the last row. The first bridesmaid walked up and the woman said, “Oh my gosh, she’s gorgeous.”

Then the next one came. “Oh my gosh.”

And the next one. On and on.

Finally, the last bridesmaid, Stephanie’s sister Suzanne walked up and she goes, “Are all of Stephanie’s friends models?” And honestly? Kind of. They were all just so easy to photograph, but more than that, they were so kind. That was really the feeling of the entire day.

The perfect timeline – Estate at Independence Richmond Wedding

Stephanie and Joe booked eight hours of wedding photography, which meant we had a decent amount to fit into the day. It wasn’t a super tight timeline, but we definitely needed everyone to be on their game. And they were.

This is one of those things that can make such a huge difference on a wedding day. If you are worried about your timeline, there are two things we always tell couples to prioritize: have a good planner or coordinator, and have a wedding party that is ready to go.

If your friends know where they’re supposed to be, have their shoes on, have their earrings in, and are ready when you need them, it makes an enormous difference. Stephanie and Joe had both. So even though we had a lot to photograph in eight hours, the day never felt like we were running around trying to catch up.

Making a Summer Wedding Comfortable

It was definitely warm. It was summer in Virginia, after all.

But thankfully, it wasn’t the 95-degree kind of summer day. It was closer to 85, which felt like a win. During our pre-wedding day call, Stephanie’s mom had actually asked us about renting umbrellas for the ceremony. Her thought was basically, “We could make this a little more comfortable for everyone. What do you think?”

And our answer was absolutely. People being comfortable matters more than whether or not something looks a certain way in person. But the great thing is, the umbrellas looked fantastic in photos too!

They were beautiful, they gave lots of people some shade, and the little fans they provided were another great touch. The ceremony ended up looking really intentional while also making everyone a little more comfortable.

The Little Details – Estate at Independence Richmond Wedding

Stephanie and Joe did a great job of adding little pieces of their personality throughout the day. One of our favorites was their wedding flag.

Stephanie & Joe had a custom flag made with their last name, and it looked stunning! The venue even mounted it on one of their golf sticks, which tied the whole thing together.

We brought it out during sunset portraits and grabbed a few photos with it, and I just loved the idea of them taking that flag home afterward.

I told Stephanie, “You should frame that.” Because that’s the kind of wedding detail that can actually become something you keep. In twenty years, I feel like they’re going to look at that flag and still love it.

A Little Bourbon Before the Reception

They also did the traditional digging up of the bourbon, which we always think is such a fun little wedding tradition. It’s a great way to spend a few minutes with your wedding party before heading into the reception and officially starting the party.

And apparently, it worked. It was supposed to rain on their wedding day, but it didn’t actually start until we had gotten home that night. So we’re giving the bourbon credit.

The Paper Details Were So Good

We can’t finish talking about Stephanie and Joe’s wedding without mentioning their paper goods. Because, oh my gosh. Their invitation suite was incredible. I actually messaged the designer afterward because I needed to tell her how much I loved it.

And it wasn’t just the invitations. Their rehearsal dinner signage, menu cards, table numbers, and all of the other little paper details worked together so well.

That’s something we don’t think couples always consider when they’re planning wedding details. You might spend a lot of time choosing a beautiful invitation, but those same design elements can carry through the entire wedding.

The table numbers. The menus. The little signs. Even a legacy table. All those little pieces together make the whole wedding feel more cohesive and intentional. And Stephanie and Joe absolutely nailed it.

Sunset Portraits at The Estate at Independence

Of course, we had to get outside for sunset portraits. The Estate at Independence has so many pretty areas around the property, and the golf course gives you plenty of room to move around and find different backgrounds.

This is also where we brought out their wedding flag for a few photos, which ended up being one of those little moments that we’re really glad we captured. After a full summer wedding day, getting outside for a few quiet minutes together is always worth it.

And these two were just so easy to photograph.

An Incredible Virginia Day – Estate at Independence Richmond Wedding

Stephanie and Joe were wonderful from beginning to end.

They were natural, relaxed, and surrounded themselves with people who were genuinely excited to celebrate them. Their wedding day had all of the things we love photographing: beautiful details, a great venue, a fun wedding party, thoughtful little personal touches, and plenty of time for the two of them to actually enjoy the day.

And we have to say it again: The Estate at Independence is such a beautiful Virginia wedding venue. We’re still wondering why we don’t photograph there every weekend?!
