Belle Isle Richmond River Engagement

Hey friends! Today we’re sharing Anna and Brandon’s Belle Isle Richmond river engagement session that we just photographed in the heart of downtown along the James River. And honestly, this one felt like such a perfect mix of adventure, real life, and that golden sunset magic we’re always chasing.

Getting to Belle Isle – Belle Isle Richmond River Engagement

Okay, so quick reality check about Belle Isle. It’s one of our favorite spots for engagement sessions in Richmond because of the variety, the views, and how it shows off the James River. But getting there can sometimes be a little bit of a journey.

We happened to schedule this session on the same day as a big downtown concert. Which meant road closures, limited parking, and lots of “don’t park here” signs. Classic Richmond timing. So instead of an easy meet-up, we ended up walking over the footbridge and meeting Anna and Brandon at the bottom.

In hindsight, we probably should’ve just parked on the south side and walked over from the start.

Starting in the Fields and Exploring Belle Isle

We kicked things off in the open field area right near the entrance to Belle Isle. It’s one of our go-to spots, but it’s always a bit of a gamble depending on the grass. Has it been mowed? Is it waist-high? Somewhere in between? This time… somewhere in between. Not quite the dreamy tall grass, but still beautiful in that wild, natural Belle Isle way.

One of the things we love most about engagement sessions here is that every couple brings their own meaning to the space. And for Anna and Brandon, Belle Isle wasn’t just a pretty location. It was personal. Brandon actually proposed on one of the rocks along the James River! So of course we made our way to capture a few photos in the exact spot where this special season started.

Meaningful Spots + A Visit from Their Dog

After spending some time on “their rock,” we headed toward the South Side footbridge where Anna’s mom met us with their dog. Always a win.

We grabbed a few photos on the bridge and nearby trails, and it was one of those moments where you remember just how much variety Belle Isle has. Even if you’ve been there a dozen times, there’s always something different around the next corner.

The Dreamiest Light Through the Trees

One of our favorite parts of this engagement session happened in this small, tucked-away area right off the main path. There’s a little fenced-in section where the light was coming through perfectly. And when we say perfectly, we mean that soft, glowy, almost magical kind of light.

Anna and Brandon were just being themselves in that moment, and it clicked. They’ve been together for about 10 years, since high school, and you can feel that history in the way they interact. It’s comfortable, natural, and completely unforced.

They were one of those couples who told us up front, “this isn’t really our thing,” but also wanted photos to remember this season. And honestly, those are often our favorite sessions. No pressure, no overthinking. Just the two of them being together.

A Laid-Back Engagement Session That Felt Like Hanging Out

The whole session felt less like a formal shoot and more like walking around downtown Richmond with friends. We’d explore, pause when the light looked good, grab a few photos, and then keep going.

And somehow, in between all of that, they kept slipping into these really sweet, natural moments. The kind that don’t feel posed at all. They just happened.

A James River Sunset – Belle Isle Richmond River Engagement

We wrapped everything up back on the rocks along the James River just as the sun was setting behind the Richmond skyline. And if you’ve ever been to Belle Isle at sunset, you know exactly what we mean when we say, it’s unbeatable.

That warm glow over the water, the city in the background, and the sound of the river… It’s one of those “this is why we love Richmond” kind of moments.

It felt like the perfect ending to their engagement session.

A New Appreciation for Belle Isle

Also, side note… this session reminded us that we really need to come to Belle Isle more often outside of work. It’s such a good spot, especially for families and just getting outside along the James River.

Maybe we’ll just avoid concert days next time.

Anna and Brandon, you guys were the best! We loved getting to explore Belle Isle with you, hear more about your story, and capture this season of your engagement in such a meaningful place.

Enjoy a few of our many favorites from their sunset engagement session in downtown Richmond!
