Hey friends! Today we’re sharing Jane and John’s Dover Hall Richmond estate wedding day just outside of Richmond, Virginia. And honestly, this one has so many standout moments that we don’t even know where to begin… so naturally, we’re starting at the very end of the night and working backwards.
Michael usually heads out early during the exit to rally guests and set up lighting, so he misses some of those last quiet moments. But this time, staying back was so worth it.
Jane had changed into a second outfit that perfectly mimicked the style of her wedding dress, paired with the coolest “just married” beaded bag. At the end of the night, she and John had this little secret handshake moment that was just so them.
But what really got us was the dance floor during the final song. Everyone was hyped, surrounding them, celebrating hard. And then off to the side were Jane’s parents, just wrapped up together, watching it all. Completely still. Completely soaking it in. It was one of those moments that just hits you. Watching them watch their daughter have the best night of her life? Unreal.
Let’s rewind a bit to sunset, because if you’ve ever been to Dover Hall, you know this estate is something special. The property is massive, and at golden hour, you truly can’t take a bad photo. Whether you’re by the vines, the rolling hills, or stepping far enough back to take in the full mansion, everything just works. The light is unreal.
We always encourage couples to trust us and walk a little farther out to capture the full scale of the estate, and Jane and John were all in. Honestly, they were already halfway there before we even suggested it. The energy? A dream!
Earlier in the reception, right after their first dances, Jane and John welcomed their guests with a short speech, and we always love this. It doesn’t have to be long, but it adds so much.
They each thanked their families and shared a tradition from their own sides. Jane’s side included scratch-off cards at each place setting, which had the entire room buzzing with excitement. People were winning a few dollars here and there, and the couple joked that any winnings could be donated back to them, which everyone loved!
From John’s family came a sung prayer, with everyone joining in. The participation, the energy, the connection, It was one of those receptions where you could just feel how tight-knit everyone was.
Their ceremony took place in the sunken garden at Dover Hall, probably our favorite spots on the property. It’s tucked in, intimate, and incredibly beautiful, especially in the early evening.
Jane’s dad officiated the ceremony, and we will always stand by this: having a friend or family member officiate just makes everything more meaningful. The stories are personal, the delivery feels natural, and honestly, you want that person in your photos.
There’s something about those ceremonies that just feel more connected, more emotional, and more memorable.
We also have to talk about the florals, because WOW!
Their planner, Marylee from Marylee Marmer Events also handled the floral design, and it was next level. When we first arrived for detail photos, the florals weren’t fully set up yet, and we debated starting without them… but waiting was the best decision we could have made.
Once everything was in place, it completely elevated every single photo. We even got to pull extra blooms for styling, and it felt like being a kid in a candy store. Every image just came to life!
Earlier in the day, one thing that really stood out was how intentional Jane and John were about their wedding party.
They kept it small. Just a couple of people each, and it made the entire getting ready experience feel calm, fun, and genuinely enjoyable. Music was playing, people were laughing, but it never felt chaotic.
Even in a large venue like Dover Hall, where there’s plenty of space, smaller groups just create a more relaxed environment. And it showed. Everyone was present, supportive, and fully in it with them.
From their first look to knocking out pretty much all of their wedding party and family portraits before the ceremony, Jane and John trusted the flow of the day, and it gave them time to actually be together.
They were easygoing, up for anything, and just genuinely excited to experience every part of their wedding day. That kind of energy makes such a difference!
From start to finish, this Dover Hall wedding felt like the kind of day you wish you could bottle up. The setting, the people, the intentional choices… It all came together in a way that felt effortless and meaningful.
