VMFA Winter Wedding

Today we are sharing Emily and Steven’s VMFA winter wedding. They just got married here in Richmond at the VMFA.

This was our first 2024 wedding. Especially the last couple of years we’ve been shooting more January weddings.  I kind of love it. It does have a little bit of different planning to it. You have to think a little more about the weather, and the light.

With all things considered they had a pretty nice day. It was sunny it was warmer in the earlier part of the day. Maybe not necessarily for those that couldn’t put a coat on. But it was certainly warmer than it is today.

One of the things we really loved about this VMFA winter wedding day is that they actually live in the fan. They are just a few blocks from the VMFA. And so they got an Airbnb for Steven to get ready in just a couple of blocks away. And then he met Emily at their house for their first look, before the two of them walked together to their wedding.

It was all so close and made things so personal – and easy!

I was a little nervous about the logistics of them walking to their venue when they first told me that they were thinking of doing this. But honestly it ended up being the easiest option and such a sweet part of the day for them to be able to spend together.

It’s a walk that they do regularly in their normal lives, so it was so sweet they did this on their wedding day.

Their bridal party just met us over at the VMFA. Some of them drove, some of them took a scooter. And then we did portraits over there.

They also got some time together just after their ceremony since we got all their portraits done before the ceremony. Because they did a first look we did all the portraits of them, all of their wedding party, and all of their family before their ceremony even started. This was especially important because their ceremony started past sunset. So we really wouldn’t have been able to take in any outdoor portraits after the fact.

Emily and Steven had their ceremony at the VMFA in the atrium. Then we took a few portraits around the gallery before they just had downtime where their planner brought them snacks and drinks and they got some more time together. Then, they joined in the reception in the marble hall.

They really did a good job of doing whatever they wanted to do for their wedding day. They walked to their venue. Their best friend was the officiant. She walked her self down the aisle but still had a father-daughter dance. They played their dances on vinyl which was such a sweet, personal touch.

We love you guys. Enjoy a few of our many favorites from your beautiful VMFA winter wedding day.
