We always start our sessions with a quick disclaimer. We let our couples know that the first 10 or 15 minutes are going to be totally awkward. Most people aren’t used to being photographed or being posed and that can obviously be quite bizarre. We started off Kelly and Rich’s session in just the same way, letting them know that we might ask them to do things that don’t feel a hundred percent natural, but looks completely natural through our cameras. Immediately, they said we trust you two, we’ll do anything you say… and that’s just about the best thing that Michael and I could ever hear to start off a session! Kelly and Rich really did trust us through their whole session! Rich even moved a picnic table that was in the way of a gorgeous location we found with that perfect glowy light! We will do anything for glowy light, and when our couples will do anything to get that too, we know we are photographing the perfect couples (Don’t worry, that will definitely make it into the best of behind the scenes at the end of the year!). And when we have clients as amazing as Kelly & Rich, that trust us that much, and are so ready to do any crazy idea we come up with, It makes the session not only go smoother, but also so much more special! These two were complete naturals in front of our cameras. And the way they make each other laugh was just the most wonderful thing to photograph.
We headed down to historic Yorktown for their session. We have photographed there before but normally stay by the waterfront. However, Rich is a bit of a history buff so we ventured more towards the historical buildings and I’m so glad we did! We found the cutest little white house with blue shutters that I just absolutely fell in love with! It was a gorgeous fall day with tons of people out and about, but we managed to find some stunning areas where it seemed like these two were the only two in the world.
It was such a blast shooting with Kelly and Rich and getting to know them a little bit better. We can’t wait for their sweet southern wedding. And we’re even more excited that we don’t have to wait all the way until the wedding day to see these two again (because we could have kept photographing them all night!). They are doing a ‘burying the bourbon’ that we get to photograph, and we are so excited for that!
