Hey Friends! Today we’re sharing Carly and Brian’s Jefferson Hotel Richmond black-tie wedding day that we just photographed at the The Jefferson Hotel, and honestly, this one might be one of our favorite Jefferson weddings to date.
There were a lot of reasons for that. The weather in Richmond was absolutely perfect. The kind of day you hope for when you’re planning a classic black-tie wedding downtown. But beyond that, it was the people. Their wedding party was incredible… Kind, organized, and completely on top of everything. Hair and makeup finished on time. Everyone was where they needed to be. And they were just genuinely fun to be around! It makes such a difference.
Their families were the same way. So warm, so welcoming, and clearly such a big part of Carly and Brian’s lives. From the very beginning of the day, you could feel how meaningful this wedding was to everyone involved.
One of the sweetest parts of the day happened before the ceremony, when Brian did a first look with his mom. It was one of those quiet, emotional moments that just sticks with you. You could feel how much it meant.
Carly and Brian also shared a first look on one of the Jefferson’s iconic balconies, which is always such a beautiful and classic spot for portraits. And Brian’s reaction was priceless; shocked and stunned! Carly did look stunning in her dress, complete with a long veil, and a bow at the back. After that, we explored a few areas around the front and side of the hotel for portraits. We found a couple new favorite spots that we’ll definitely be using again.
But one of the most unforgettable moments came during the reception.
Carly’s mom had mentioned ahead of time that she had an old home video of Carly and her dad dancing together when she was little. They were thinking about playing it during the reception, and we ended up helping bring that idea to life with a projector setup.
During the reception, Carly’s dad shared a story about how he used to sing to her and dance with her when she was a child. It was the only thing that would calm her down. And then, as he finished, the video played in the background… followed by their father-daughter dance to that same song.
It was one of those moments where the entire room just felt it. Truly unforgettable.
The whole day flowed so smoothly. We were able to complete most of the family portraits before the ceremony, which gave Carly and Brian so much freedom to enjoy cocktail hour — and they really took advantage of that.
One of our favorite things they did was intentionally visit every single table during the reception. Not just a quick hello, they actually spent time connecting with their guests. It felt like every group they walked up to was “their people,” and it was clear how much they valued each person being there.
That’s something we always tell our couples: if it matters to you, build it into the timeline. And this day was a perfect example of how that intentionality pays off.
The Jefferson also has one of the best traditions for transitioning into dinner. They ring a dinner bell to invite guests into the ballroom, and Carly & Brian got to do it! It’s such a fun and classic touch, especially for a black tie wedding in a space like this.
Before we wrapped up for the night, we snuck Carly and Brian away for one last photo. A fun, intentional moment in the elevator. It was a recreation of a photo from Carly’s grandparents’ wedding day, which made it even more special!
If you ever tell us a photo idea is tied to your family history, we are all in. No questions asked.
This Jefferson Hotel Richmond black-tie wedding in downtown was everything you hope it will be… elegant, meaningful, and full of genuine connection!
Carly and Brian, we loved every second of this day with you! We’re so excited to share some of our many favorites!
Congrats, you two.
