Today we’re sharing Clare and John’s beautiful summer wedding at the Barns at Mattaponi Springs, just north of Richmond. The day started with a twist—literally. As we turned onto the road that leads into the venue, a massive tree had fallen and blocked the entire path. It had to have come down just moments before we got there because guests were piling up behind us.
Michael jumped out of the car, ready to try and move the thing (not a twig—a full, grown tree you could barely wrap your arms around). Thankfully, another guest pulled up—an older gentleman who jumped out to help—and together, somehow, they managed to get it out of the road. Turns out, they were headed to the same place because many of the wedding guests were staying on-site. That is one of the best features of Mattaponi Springs… lodging.
Clare and John had friends and family stay in the Manor House, a gorgeous white home situated between the venue’s two barns. Each room had its own bathroom, making it feel like a relaxed, luxury retreat. One guest described it as “adult summer camp,” and we couldn’t agree more. Everyone got to enjoy not just the wedding day, but the entire weekend together. We even got to see our past couple Karen & David again—which made the day extra special!
The ceremony took place right outside the Manor House on a hilltop overlooking the water. With Richmond’s summer in full swing, it was hot, but the setup made it easy for the couple and their wedding party to stay cool indoors until it was time to head out. Clare’s brother officiated the ceremony, and he absolutely crushed it—funny, heartfelt, and totally captivating. At one point, he joked, “Isn’t this beautiful? Now imagine how nice it would be to get married here in April!” and had everyone laughing.
Clare and John chose not to do a first look, which we initially thought might be tricky with the weather, but the forecast held and the light was perfect. After the ceremony, we did their portraits right there in the ceremony space (after clearing a few chairs) and around the house. They kept things low-key and didn’t make a big entrance into cocktail hour—just wandered in, welcomed guests, and blended in like they’d been there all along. So perfectly them.
Everything about Clare and John’s wedding at Mattaponi Springs was intentionally relaxed and joy-filled. They weren’t focused on being the center of attention—they were focused on their guests having a great time. The venue made that so easy. The flow from ceremony to cocktail hour to reception in the larger barn was seamless.
And John? Easily the most gracious groom we’ve had all year. We lost count of how many times he offered us water, food, or checked in to make sure we were okay. It was their wedding day, and yet they never stopped making us feel taken care of—just a testament to how kind and thoughtful they both are.
The reception was a party. Their band, Ten Spot, is phenomenal, and the dance floor was full from the moment it opened. And, Mattaponi springs also opened the big barn door that overlooked the gorgeous view of the water! The “Shout” song might’ve been one of the best we’ve seen in a long time. Clare and John’s guests were ready to dance and brought so much energy.
And just when the heat called for something cool, Gelati Celesti rolled in for late-night dessert. Yet another connection to Karen and David’s wedding! We snapped some photos of Clare & John enjoying their ice cream, even though it was melting down their arms (worth it). And everyone was laughing, dancing, and soaking in every minute.
Clare and John, your day was golden. We loved every second of it. Your people, your love, your joy—it was such an honor to be there. Congratulations! Enjoy a few of our many favorites below.
If these guys look familiar, it’s because we just photographed their engagement session.
