Estate at River Run Wedding

Today we’re sharing Alexa and Joseph’s wedding day that we just photographed here in Richmond—or technically, the far West End—at the stunning The Estate at River Run. And wow… this was our first time shooting an Estate at River Run wedding, and it absolutely blew us away.

Estate at River Run Wedding | A Hidden Gem in Richmond, Virginia

From the moment you drive onto the property, you know this place is something special. You wind through rolling hills before the estate comes into view, and then suddenly—you’re driving straight toward this incredible mansion.

And calling it a “house” honestly feels wrong. It’s truly an estate in every sense of the word.

Inside, there are so many thoughtful design details—beautiful wallpaper, unique rooms, and little moments everywhere you look. It feels historic in the best way, while still being completely updated and functional for a wedding day.

But the real showstopper?

The back patio overlooking the James River.

It’s one of those views that just stops you in your tracks.

Getting Ready at The Estate at River Run

One of our favorite parts of this Estate at River Run wedding was how well the space functioned for getting ready.

The girls were upstairs in the main estate, and the guys were down at the pool house—which made for such a perfect separation. Everyone had their own space, and it never felt crowded or chaotic.

And the upstairs? So good.

Each room had its own style and personality, there was plenty of natural light, and the bathrooms were incredible for hair and makeup. It’s one of those setups that just makes the morning feel easy.

A James River Ceremony with the Best Views

Alexa and Joseph’s ceremony took place right on the back patio overlooking the James River—and honestly, you don’t need much decor when your backdrop looks like that.

It was simple, intentional, and absolutely beautiful.

Because the estate sits up high above the river, you get this sweeping view of the water and even the train tracks below. At one point during cocktail hour, we heard that multiple trains passed by—and somehow, you still barely notice the sound. It just adds to the experience.

This is one of those Richmond, Virginia wedding ceremony locations that really speaks for itself.

Using the Entire Estate for the Wedding Day Flow

Another thing we loved about this Estate at River Run wedding was how the space was used throughout the day.

  • Ceremony: Back patio overlooking the James River
  • Cocktail Hour: Patio + inside the estate
  • Dinner: Lower level ballroom
  • Reception: Back upstairs for dancing

It created this really natural flow where guests were able to experience different parts of the property, and it kept the energy moving all night.

A Reception Led by Family (and an Ice Cream Truck)

One of the most memorable parts of the night?

Joseph’s dad’s band played for the entire reception.

This made everything feel even more personal. During the first dance with his mom, his brother even jumped in for a moment—it was one of those spontaneous, emotional, and just really fun moments that you can’t plan.

And if we had to describe this wedding in one word, it would be: joyful.

From start to finish, there was constant laughter. Like full, belly-laugh, can’t-stop-smiling kind of joy. You could tell that Alexa and Joseph cared most about being present, celebrating with their people, and creating an experience where everyone could just have fun.

And they absolutely did that.

Also… they had an ice cream truck for dessert.

Which, yes, we fully participated in on the way out—and it was just as good as it sounds.

Between an incredible venue, an amazing vendor team, and a couple who truly prioritized joy and connection, this Estate at River Run wedding in Richmond, Virginia is one we won’t forget anytime soon.

For now, enjoy a few of our many favorites.

Congrats, you two 🤍
