Today we want to talk a little about newborn photography, and why — even as Richmond VA newborn photographers — we didn’t fully understand just how meaningful these sessions would become until we became parents ourselves.
If you’re currently searching for a Richmond VA newborn photographer, chances are you’re in a season that feels exciting, overwhelming, emotional, and honestly… a little blurry. We get it. And we want to walk you through what newborn photography can look like, why it matters more than you might think, and what you can expect from a relaxed, in-home newborn session here in Richmond.
When we had our first baby, we didn’t realize how cherished newborn photos would become.. not just for us, but for him.
Our kids love looking at photos of themselves as babies. They ask so often:
As parents (and yes, as a former psych major 👋), we’ve seen firsthand how powerful these images are. They help kids understand their story. They reinforce belonging. They become part of family identity.
And yet.. when we look back at our own newborn days.. we realized how few photos we had of ourselves with our baby. We were present (which is beautiful), but we wish we had more images capturing us in that season.
That’s one of the biggest reasons we care so deeply about newborn photography now.
If you Google newborn photography in Richmond VA, you’ll see a wide range of options:
All of these can be beautiful.. but they’re very different experiences.
We specialize in in-home lifestyle newborn photography here in Richmond.
If you’ve ever worked with us for a wedding or family session, you know our philosophy:
Newborn sessions are no different.
We come into your home, work with your space, follow your baby’s lead, and focus on connection, not perfection.
One of the biggest concerns we hear from parents is:
“Our house is a mess.”
We promise.. it’s okay.
Typically, we’ll use:
When we arrive, we:
If you’re only comfortable using one small area of your home, that’s completely fine. We adapt every session to each family and space.
You don’t need to deep clean. Tight, cozy images mean clutter rarely shows anyway.
Before your session, we send a simple guide, but here are the highlights:
We recommend feeding your baby as close to our arrival time as possible. While you’re feeding or changing them, we:
Spit-up happens. Outfit changes happen. Crying happens. None of it phases us.. we’re parents too.
Our Richmond VA newborn photography sessions are booked in two-hour windows, even though we often only need 45–60 minutes.
Why?
If you need 20 minutes to finish getting ready, that’s fine.
If baby cries for 30 minutes, that’s fine.
If we just sit on the couch and reset, that’s fine.
We’ve held babies while parents regroup. We’ve waited. We’ve adapted. That’s the whole point.
Every newborn session looks different, because every baby is different.
Years from now, you won’t care that your baby needed comfort. You’ll care that these photos feel real.
Newborn photography isn’t just about pretty images.
It’s about:
If you’re expecting (or newly postpartum) and wondering if you’re doing things “right”.. you are.
And this is one small way to care for your future family: by preserving this fleeting season honestly and gently.
If this helped you feel even a little more at ease about newborn photography, then we’ve done our job.
And if you’re still deciding whether to book a Richmond VA newborn photographer, we’d love to answer your questions.. no pressure
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
Neither do we 😉
