We’re halfway through 2025, and after dozens of gorgeous celebrations, we thought it’d be fun to round up the best wedding trends we’ve seen this year—along with a few tried-and-true favorites that never fail. Whether you’re planning your own wedding (whether it’s in Richmond, VA or not), or just love wedding inspo, these ideas are fun, intentional, and (bonus) often pretty easy to pull off. Here’s what we think have been the 2025 Best Richmond wedding trends that we’ve seen so far.
One of our recent couples had a brass band lead the entire wedding party and all guests from cocktail hour to the reception tent—and it was electric. The dancing started early, guests were buzzing, and the transition was smooth and fun. It’s a festive, guest-focused way to start the party and a perfect option if your ceremony or cocktail hour is in a different spot than the reception.
Unexpected? Yes. Incredible? Also yes. We’ve seen bagpipes used twice already this year—once to lead a bride and her mom down the aisle, and another time to welcome guests as they arrived. It’s dramatic, personal, and sets the tone instantly. Bonus: it’s a nod to heritage and tradition for many.
Several of our couples this year opted for an intimate ceremony with just close family and then celebrated with everyone else at a larger reception. We love how this allows for meaningful moments while still throwing a joyful party. Our recent couple Melissa & Joel even had a trolley bring their ceremony guests through Richmond for a celebratory ride—iconic.
Okay, we know this isn’t for everyone. But for the right couple, spending time together in the morning—whether it’s having breakfast, going on a walk, or just hanging out—can be such a grounding, memorable part of the day. Then you can still split up for hair/makeup and getting dressed before jumping into you first look. So sweet and intentional.
A second dress? Sure. But a second hairstyle? Game-changer! At our recent styled shoot at Bienvenue in Powhatan, one of our favorite hair and makeup artist, Kelsea with Radiant Reflection, transformed our bride’s hair from romantic curls to a chic updo in 15 minutes flat, and it totally transformed her look for the reception. It’s a practical and pretty way to freshen up (and cool off!) for dancing.
This one is for the photographers and detail lovers: gathering all the reception bits—signature cocktails, fun napkins, funky glasses, etc.—into one styled flat lay at the end of the night. It’s a super cool way to capture your reception vibe all in one shot.
Yes, really. A mini golf course at a recent wedding stole the show. Each hole also had a “How well do you know the couple?” trivia question. It encouraged mingling, kept guests entertained, and was just a total hit. Especially great for venues with big cocktail spaces that need something extra. Stephanie & Casey got theirs from Big Top Entertainment, but there’s a few companies you can use in the Richmond area.
Whether it’s your brother, best friend, or a parent, having someone who knows you well officiate the ceremony adds warmth and meaning. Every time a couple does this, guests rave about how personal and heartfelt it felt—and we do too.
We’ll never stop recommending this. Private vows let you say what you really want to say, without a microphone or an audience. It’s intimate, sweet, and often one of the most emotional parts of the day.
Bringing your pup for just a few moments—especially during the first look—is such a fun way to include your full little family. There are even services in Richmond that specialize in wedding-day dog care, and the photos always end up being frame-worthy.
Two words: Gelati Celesti. A post dinner ice-cream cart or late night bar snack is a crowd pleaser and way more memorable than a traditional favor. Plus, Gelati Celesti is perfect for summer weddings in Richmond.
Not a fan of the whole reception pausing to watch you cut cake? You’re not alone. More and more couples are doing a private cake cutting, often with just their parents nearby. It feels relaxed and meaningful—and yes, you still get the photos.
Instead of splitting up into hotel rooms, some couples are renting an Airbnb for their whole wedding party to stay and get ready in. It’s more fun, more personal, and creates such a cozy vibe.
Changing into a second look—whether it’s a party dress, sneakers, or a sparkly jumpsuit—is not only fun but also practical. It’s a great way to be more comfortable and dance freely. Grooms: your turn too. A jacket change or change of shoes add in to the fun!
Make your wedding about you. Whether you’re incorporating a trendy moment, revisiting a classic, or just doing your own thing entirely, the best weddings are the ones where you decide what you think is important. Not only will it make your wedding day yours, it will also keep you genuinely excited about each part of the day.
